ARTIST STATEMENT

Our choreography is a multicultural collaboration between the conscious and unconscious mind. I begin my practice with a few repetitive movements to release the unconsciousness until it is freed from within, and allow the sequences to take shape and merge with my consciousness. The result is a full and dynamic performance, which transcends the heart of what it means to be human. In order to refine my performance, I strive to further understand what it means to be human and where the conscious and unconscious mind derives from – our diverse cultures.

My choreography challenges myself to fuse the aspects of Eastern and Western culture – psychologically and spiritually, by means of dance, movement and theater. Through studying how cultures historically originated, flourished and evolved with influences such as the environment, geography, events and ideas, the significance of each culture's background intrigues and inspires my choreography.

Of the many aspects of culture, I am especially drawn to the storytelling traditions, both religious and secular, visual and kinetic. Through these models, I have worked on developing a style of synthesizing Western techniques of dance, mime, and drama, with Eastern forms including Japan's traditional, contemporary theater, and dance, as well as Tai Chi and Balinese dance. Having integrated these influences, I am eager to continue developing, deepening and enriching my own style.

As I learn more about cultures, our choreography evolves with diversity both culturally and in technique, and have come to understand more deeply the fundamental distinctions of our cultures. Yet at the same time, as we interlace them through our movements, we often come to an unexpected realization and beauty of the commonalities amongst our cultures. This is what makes binbin Factory's unique dance movement. Our dance is our language and culture.

MISSION

We believe that it is our task to tell a story and raise questions and new realizations through our dance. Especially since 2011 after the 3.11 Tohoku earthquare and tsunami in Japan, more than ever our mission has been to express the events occuring in our society. binbinFactory will continue to perform infront of audiences to pass along stories that shall never be forgotten, and hopefully spark realizations and new ideas for each of us to discover a personal connection.
